CT (Computed Tomography) Scan

What is a CT (Computed Tomography) Scan?

Computed tomography (CT scan or CAT scan) uses X-ray images to make cross-sectional pictures of the body to look for abnormalities, such as orthopedic injuries, heart disease or cancers. CT scan data can be enhanced or used in conjunction with a PET scan to provide greater detail.  Mercy's Downtown Baltimore location offers a state-of-the-art combination PET/CT system that produces 3D images, providing a more accurate picture of the internal structures and impact of disease.

When is a CT Scan used?

A doctor may request a CT scan to aid in diagnosis and treatment including:

  • Assessment of internal injuries from trauma
  • Cancer detection and management
  • Detection and management of heart and lung disease or infection
  • Diagnosis of bone and joint problems - fracture, tumors, arthritis
