About Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism, also referred to as overactive thyroid, occurs when the thyroid produces too much hormone. Excessive hormone from the thyroid can result in an increase in the body’s metabolic rate. Hyperthyroidism can lead to osteoporosis as well as heart, eye and skin conditions.  It is important to see an endocrinology specialist when symptoms of hyperthyroidism occur.
Symptoms & Diagnosis

Hyperthyroid symptoms can be similar to the symptoms of various other health conditions and may include:

  • Weight loss with an increased appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Sweating
  • Nervousness/irritability
  • Heart palpitations
  • Muscle weakness
  • Diarrhea
  • Protruding eyes
  • Swelling at the base of the neck

To diagnose hyperthyroidism, endocrinologists will review your medical history and conduct a physical exam. The endocrinologist also may conduct a blood test to measure the amount of hormones the thyroid is producing. A radioactive iodine uptake test and a thyroid scan may be conducted to help determine the reason for the overactive thyroid.

Treatment Options for Hyperthyroidism

The goal of hyperthyroidism treatment is to control the overactive thyroid by slowing down the production of the thyroid hormone. Hyperthyroidism treatment options include:

  • Antithyroid medications
  • Radioactive iodine
  • Surgery to remove some or all of the thyroid

Most patients who are diagnosed with overactive thyroid respond well to treatment for their hyperthyroidism.
