Bursitis and Tendonitis Treated by Mercy Orthopedic Doctors
Orthopedic and sports medicine surgeons at Mercy specialize in diagnosing and treating bursitis and tendonitis (also known as tendinitis). Patients from across the Baltimore region seek Mercy's expertise when suffering from bursitis or tendonitis pain.
Bursitis and tendonitis are common overuse injuries in sports and general overhead activities. Bursitis is most common in the shoulder, elbow and hip (trochanteric bursitis). Tendonitis is most common in the shoulder, elbow, wrist and heel. Bursitis and tendonitis most often are caused by repetitive motions but also can be caused by trauma to the joint. The tendon and bursa, the fluid-filled sac which prevents friction with motion, become inflamed when they are pinched between the joint during repetitive motion.
Bursitis and tendonitis symptoms include:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Stiff or achy feeling
Bursitis and tendonitis most often can be diagnosed during a physical exam. An orthopedic surgeon may request imaging tests such as X-rays, ultrasound or MRIs, to rule out other joint conditions that have similar symptoms.
Bursitis and tendonitis treatment can include:
- Rest
- Ice
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Physical therapy
- Corticosteroid injection
If symptoms persist, surgery to increase the space available for the tendons is considered.
